José Luis Santalla pertenece a la generación que, iniciando su trayectoria en los años ochenta, ha utilizado la fotografía como una herramienta versátil y dúctil, en una exploración imaginativa de sus posibilidades narrativas. Sus series se han sucedido como una búsqueda de posibilidades límite ( Manipulaciones ) o en los que la duplicación, desde la introducción de la idea del espejo, genera espacios posibles para la imaginación ( Dípticos ). Muchas de sus imágenes han tendido a construir alegorías en las que los objetos adoptan un significado y un uso diferente, decantándose más por desarrollar un discurso de fragmentación estilística que le permitiera una versatilidad narrativa desde la cual abordar temas concretos, tensiones y contradicciones ( En silencio ). Oscilando entre lo inerte y lo animado, y precisamente, a partir de sus últimas series, Un mundo feliz y Fugas , su trabajo adquiere un espesor más denso, ligado a una meditación sobre los valores y los modelos en la sociedad contemporánea.
