Are you tired of Hotmail’s lack of IMAP support? We have all been there. Hotmail is great for emailing and chatting, but it lacks the ability to sync your emails with Outlook or any other IMAP client. Let’s get started on how to set up Hotmail IMAP in 10 minutes.
Setup Hotmail IMAP in 10 Minutes
Step One: Log in to Hotmail. Click on the gear icon at the upper-right corner of Hotmail’s inbox and select “Settings.” In Hotmail Settings, click or tap Advanced settings. Scroll down until you see IMAP next to the Mail Formatting section. From here, toggle it ON so that Hotmails will sync with your email client using IMAP protocol as well as POP protocol which most clients use by default when connecting to any mail server (e.g., Outlook).
Step Two: Generate an SSL certificate for outgoing emails via a free online provider like Let’s Encrypt if not already set up before continuing onto this step. This is crucial because Hotmail does not support TLS encryption but instead relies on STARTTLS. It is the only way www.Hotmail.co.uk will work with IMAP clients like Outlook or Apple Mail, etc.
- For Windows: Install Let’s Encrypt for free on your PC using a program called Certbot and follow its instructions to generate an SSL certificate that can be downloaded from your computer into Hotmail settings as shown in step one.
- For Mac OSX: Download Let’s Encrypt client for macOS (similar to certbot) and run it by clicking “Install” while you are logged in as Administrator account on your mac and enter Sudo password if prompted at any time during the installation process. Choose “Generate Certificate”. The rest of the steps should be similar to what we have gone over so far – just refer to Hotmail settings to complete the process.
Step Three: After setting up the Hotmail IMAP protocol, log in with your email client and confirm that Hotmails are syncing correctly.
Step Four: Set up your Hotmail account on mobile devices to receive and send emails using Hotmail’s newer protocol that is compatible with most clients.
- Log in to the Hotmail app, go into settings > Advanced Settings > Mail Formatting section -> Toggle “IMAP” ON under “Mail Format.” This will force Hotmails’ new mail formatting setting to be synced on all of your email accounts.
Go back out from the app & return back later when you see a notification – it can take up to an hour before changes have taken effect! You’re done now and Hotmail IMAP should be working on all of your email clients!
